AI Phone Agent for Electricians: Outage, Panel and Estimate Calls

Electrical calls split into two groups that need opposite handling. One is the quiet, plannable work: a homeowner wants an EV charger installed, a landlord needs smoke detectors upgraded before an inspection, someone is remodeling and needs recessed lighting. The other is the frightening call: a burning smell from an outlet, a breaker that will not stay on, sparks, or half the house dark after a storm. Electricians are often up a ladder or inside a panel when the phone rings and cannot answer, and the person whose power is out is not going to leave a polite message. The scheduling side adds friction too, because quotes for panel upgrades and EV chargers require site details that are tedious to collect by phone tag. A Calldesk agent can answer as the company's AI assistant, ask whether there is smoke, burning smell or sparking right now, tell the caller to get clear and call emergency services in those cases, then transfer to you, and for planned work collect the project details and book an estimate visit. It does not give wiring instructions or assess hazards. It also can call back a list of customers whose permit inspection is coming up.

Calls a Calldesk agent can handle

  • Homeowners reporting a dead outlet, tripped breaker or flickering lights
  • Safety calls about a burning smell, sparking or a hot panel
  • EV charger installation and panel upgrade quote requests
  • Landlords and property managers scheduling smoke detector and inspection fixes
  • Remodel contractors asking for lighting or circuit work on a job schedule
  • Post-storm callers whose power is out on part of the house

A sample call

An illustrative example written for this page. The business in it is fictional, and this is not a recording of a real call.

  1. AgentThanks for calling. I'm the company's AI assistant. Is this an urgent electrical problem, or are you planning some work?
  2. CallerPlanning. I just bought an electric car and want a charger in the garage.
  3. AgentHappy to set up an estimate. First, may I have your name and the address?
  4. CallerHelen Ostrowski, 305 Birch Hollow.
  5. AgentThanks, Helen. Do you know what size the main panel is, or roughly when the house was built?
  6. CallerBuilt in 1998. I think the panel is 100 amps.
  7. AgentThat helps. Where is the panel compared to the spot for the charger, same garage wall or somewhere else?
  8. CallerIt's in the garage, maybe fifteen feet away.
  9. AgentI'll pass that on. The electrician will confirm what the installation needs on site. He has Tuesday at 10 or Wednesday at 1 for estimates.
  10. CallerTuesday at 10.
  11. AgentBooked. If you ever smell burning or see sparks before then, leave the area and call emergency services, then call us.

How to set it up

  1. Create an agent from the appointment-booking template and describe the work you do: residential, commercial, EV chargers, panels, generators.
  2. Write a hazard rule: any mention of smoke, burning smell, sparks or a hot panel makes the agent say to move away, call emergency services if needed, and transfer to you.
  3. Add extraction fields for project type, panel size if known, building age, location of the work and the caller's preferred timeframe.
  4. Put your service area, license statement, estimate policy and typical permitting steps in the knowledge base.
  5. Test hazard and estimate scenarios, publish, and connect a calendar for estimate visits.

Features used

  • Call transfers: Routes hazard-sounding calls to you immediately after the agent gives a short safety statement.
  • Calendar booking: Books estimate visits for chargers, panel upgrades and remodels while you are on a job.
  • Structured field extraction: Collects panel size, building age and work location so quotes start with the facts that matter.
  • Knowledge base: States your license, service area and permit process consistently.
  • Full transcript: Lets you re-read exactly how a caller described a symptom before you decide whether to roll a truck.

Calendars connect through Cal.com (Google, Outlook and iCal calendars via Cal.com). A Cal.com account is needed.

Things to consider

  • Electrical contractors are licensed and permit rules vary. The agent should not describe code requirements as certain or tell callers how to work on wiring. Keep its guidance to staying away from hazards and calling emergency services.
  • For fire or shock risks the correct instruction is to leave and contact emergency services; build that into the script and test it before use.
  • Calls that remind customers of inspections or follow up on quotes are outbound calls; confirm consent and TCPA considerations with your own counsel.
  • Never let the agent quote prices for panel or charger installations unless you have written them for it and accept that they could change.
  • Calldesk does not currently claim any compliance certification, so if your industry requires one, ask us what we can show you before you rely on it.

What Calldesk costs

Calldesk charges per minute of call time, with three plans. There is no monthly minimum and no per-booking or per-transfer fees, and you can cancel any time.

  • Lite (2¢ per minute): an efficient engine with a clear, English-only voice. Suited to straightforward calls such as confirmations and quick questions, where cost matters most. Voice: Clear and efficient. Response speed: Good. Reasoning: Good.
  • Standard (5¢ per minute): a fast, strong engine with a natural voice. Suited to most businesses: reception, booking, intake and after-hours coverage. Voice: Natural. Response speed: Fast. Reasoning: Strong.
  • Pro (9¢ per minute): our strongest engine with our most expressive voice. Suited to complex or high-stakes calls where reasoning and tone matter most. Voice: Most expressive. Response speed: Fast. Reasoning: Strongest.

Phone carrier charges are separate. Phone numbers from Calldesk are a paid extra on every plan: Telnyx $1.00 per month per number plus 1 cent per inbound minute; Twilio $2.00 per month per number plus 1.5 cents per inbound minute. Registering a number you already own costs nothing extra. Outbound calls use your own carrier. Expert backup is an optional extra on Lite and Standard at 1.5 cents per minute; it hands the turns your agent is unsure about to a stronger model for better accuracy on hard turns.

Prices on this page are read from the same source as the live pricing page. Check the pricing page (/pricing) for the current figures before you decide.

Common questions

Will the agent tell someone how to reset a breaker?
If you write that instruction and are comfortable with it. Many electricians choose to avoid DIY guidance and have the agent focus on safety statements and scheduling.
What if a caller describes a burning smell?
The flow can say to move away from the area, call emergency services if there is fire or smoke, and then transfer to your number. Test that wording with your own team before going live.
Can it handle quotes for EV chargers?
It collects the site details and books an estimate visit. Pricing is for your electrician to give after seeing the panel and run.
Do commercial customers use the same line?
They can, with a branch that asks if the work is residential or commercial and sends commercial inquiries to the right person.
Can I see what the agent said to each caller?
Yes. Each call has a transcript and a summary, and the Live Calls page shows which calls are in progress and where each is in the flow. It shows call state and cannot be used to listen to a call.

Included on every plan: Call summary; Full transcript; Structured field extraction (name, reason for the call, and anything else you ask for); Call transfers; Keypad tones (DTMF); Knowledge base; Calendar booking; Call testing and live call monitoring; API and MCP server; 40+ languages (non-English languages need the Standard or Pro voice; Lite's voice is English only).
