How it works
- Create an agent from the receptionist or message-taking template and write the opening line so it states that the office is closed and that the caller is speaking with an AI assistant.
- Add a code step that reads the current time in your IANA time zone and sets a within-business-hours value, then a logic split that sends open-hours calls one way and closed-hours calls another. The built-in transfer-treatment subflow template uses this exact pattern.
- Define what counts as an emergency in plain English edge conditions, such as a burst pipe or a patient in pain, and send those callers to a transfer step pointing at your on-call number.
- Add an extraction step for name, callback number and reason, and tell the agent what to say about when someone will call back.
- Publish a version on a tier that suits the call, route your after-hours number or your carrier's forwarding to the agent, and test by calling at a closed time.
- Register a call-completed webhook so each summary is pushed to your email or ticket system, and review the first week of transcripts to refine the emergency rules.
A sample call
An illustrative example written for this page. The business in it is fictional, and this is not a recording of a real call.
- AgentYou've reached Northgate Plumbing. Our office is closed right now. I'm an AI assistant and I can take a message or connect you to our on-call technician if it's an emergency.
- CallerI think a pipe burst under my kitchen sink. Water is going everywhere.
- AgentI'm sorry, that sounds stressful. If you can, turn off the main water valve. I'll treat this as an emergency. Can I get your name?
- CallerMarcus Bell.
- AgentThanks, Marcus. What's the address of the property?
- CallerTwelve Alder Court.
- AgentTwelve Alder Court, understood. I'm connecting you to our on-call technician now. If the call doesn't connect, stay on the line and I'll take your number.
- CallerOkay, please hurry.
- AgentTransferring you now.
Features used
- Code step with business-hours check: A small script computes whether you are open in your own time zone, so routing does not depend on the model guessing the clock.
- Logic split: Open-hours and closed-hours calls follow different branches, using a fixed rule rather than a judgment call.
- Call transfers: Emergencies are passed to an on-call mobile number you set.
- Structured field extraction: Name, address, callback number and reason are saved as fields your team can scan in the morning.
- Call summary and full transcript: Each overnight call is summarized so the morning review is a read, not a listen.
- Webhooks: A call-completed event can forward the summary to your email, helpdesk or CRM as soon as the call ends.
Things to consider
- An AI agent should not be your sole route for life-safety calls. Tell callers to dial emergency services for medical, fire or safety emergencies, and say so in the script.
- Test the on-call transfer at night with the real phone. A transfer to a number that is silenced or forwarded elsewhere defeats the whole design.
- If you record calls or store transcripts, tell callers in the opening and confirm retention and consent rules with counsel.
- Calldesk does not currently claim any compliance certification, so if your industry requires one, ask us what we can show you before you rely on it.
What Calldesk costs
Calldesk charges per minute of call time, with three plans. There is no monthly minimum and no per-booking or per-transfer fees, and you can cancel any time.
- Lite (2¢ per minute): an efficient engine with a clear, English-only voice. Suited to straightforward calls such as confirmations and quick questions, where cost matters most. Voice: Clear and efficient. Response speed: Good. Reasoning: Good.
- Standard (5¢ per minute): a fast, strong engine with a natural voice. Suited to most businesses: reception, booking, intake and after-hours coverage. Voice: Natural. Response speed: Fast. Reasoning: Strong.
- Pro (9¢ per minute): our strongest engine with our most expressive voice. Suited to complex or high-stakes calls where reasoning and tone matter most. Voice: Most expressive. Response speed: Fast. Reasoning: Strongest.
Phone carrier charges are separate. Phone numbers from Calldesk are a paid extra on every plan: Telnyx $1.00 per month per number plus 1 cent per inbound minute; Twilio $2.00 per month per number plus 1.5 cents per inbound minute. Registering a number you already own costs nothing extra. Outbound calls use your own carrier. Expert backup is an optional extra on Lite and Standard at 1.5 cents per minute; it hands the turns your agent is unsure about to a stronger model for better accuracy on hard turns.

Common questions
- How does the agent know whether I am open?
- You add a code step that checks the time in your time zone against hours you define, and a logic split routes the call on the result. It does not rely on the model to work out the time.
- Can it wake someone up for emergencies?
- It can transfer the live call to an on-call number you provide. It does not page people by itself, so decide who answers that number and what happens when they do not.
- Do I need a new phone number?
- Not necessarily. You can forward calls from your existing number to a number registered in Calldesk outside your hours, or route a number to the agent directly. How forwarding is set up depends on your carrier.
- Will the caller know it is an AI?
- The sample flow has the agent say so in the opening line. You write the script, and we recommend stating it plainly.
- What does it cost for quiet nights?
- Billing is per minute of talk time with no monthly minimum, so a night without calls adds no talk-time charge. Phone numbers from Calldesk have their own monthly charge, shown on the pricing page.
Included on every plan: Call summary; Full transcript; Structured field extraction (name, reason for the call, and anything else you ask for); Call transfers; Keypad tones (DTMF); Knowledge base; Calendar booking; Call testing and live call monitoring; API and MCP server; 40+ languages (non-English languages need the Standard or Pro voice; Lite's voice is English only).
