Details about Vapi come from its public pages as they were on October 10, 2026. Vapi may have changed them since, and a page that was unclear to us may be clear to you. Corrections: support@calldesk.tech. We make Calldesk, so read this page with that in mind and check anything important with Vapi directly.

About Vapi

How Vapi positions itself: A developer-focused platform for building voice agents from modular parts, where the customer chooses the transcriber, language model and voice and Vapi orchestrates the call.

Side by side

A row is shown when we could read both sides. Where Vapi's pages did not say, a cell reads "not stated on the pages we reviewed" rather than a guess. It rests on published pricing, setup and wording, and does not use call-quality or benchmark results.

About Vapi's compliance wording: Stated by vendor, self-attested: the FAQ says Vapi is HIPAA compliant, SOC 2 Type II certified and GDPR compliant. HIPAA mode requires the paid add-on and a signed BAA; HIPAA mode and Zero Data Retention are mutually exclusive. Reports are referenced on the vendor's security portal, which was not opened.

  • The per-minute figure on the page is the hosting fee; it is not an all-in call price. (source: vapi.ai)
  • Vapi docs state Success Packages are currently available to new customers; existing customers keep legacy pricing. (source: vapi.ai)

What Vapi does well

  • Highly modular pipeline: customers can pick or bring their own transcriber, model and voice, including a custom LLM endpoint, and mix providers freely. (source: docs.vapi.ai)
  • Provider models are passed through at cost with no markup, and the pricing page lists no agent cap on every plan, which keeps costs transparent for teams that want to tune each component. (source: vapi.ai)
  • Mature developer tooling: a full API for assistants, tools, phone numbers and files, assistant versioning with traffic splitting, and testing/simulation included on every plan. (source: docs.vapi.ai)
  • Flexible telephony: free Vapi numbers, plus import of Twilio, Telnyx and other SIP trunk numbers. (source: docs.vapi.ai)
  • States HIPAA support (with a BAA), SOC 2 Type II and GDPR compliance in its FAQ and publishes a trust portal. (source: docs.vapi.ai)

Conditions to check with Vapi

These are limits or conditions described on the pages we reviewed. We list them so you can check whether they matter for your calls.

  • Free Vapi phone numbers use US area codes and support inbound calls; international or outbound numbers come from importing a provider number. (source: docs.vapi.ai)
  • HIPAA mode is a paid add-on ($2,000 per month per the pricing page) and the EU region is available on the Premier package. (source: docs.vapi.ai)
  • The Usage option includes no response or uptime service-level agreement; an SLA starts with the paid Core package. (source: docs.vapi.ai)

Where Calldesk is different

  • Billing: Vapi's headline price does not cover transcriber, language model, voice and telephony transport and more, which its pages bill separately or as extras (the table above has the details). Calldesk bills one per-minute rate for the plan you choose (Lite 2¢, Standard 5¢ and Pro 9¢ per minute), and the phone carrier is billed separately unless you buy numbers from us. Compare the two on a month of your own calls.
  • Phone setup: both support bringing your own carrier. With Calldesk you register a number you own and forward calls to it. Calldesk does not offer SIP trunking, which Vapi's pages describe. Calldesk also sells numbers from Telnyx and Twilio if you prefer not to bring one.
  • Languages: Calldesk supports 40+ languages, including English; agents in a language other than English need the Standard or Pro voice, because the Lite voice speaks English only.
  • Developer tools: Calldesk has a REST API, an MCP server and signed webhooks for call.completed, call.transferred and call.analyzed events (/docs).
  • Compliance: Calldesk does not currently claim any compliance certification, so if your industry requires one, ask us what we can show you before you rely on it.

Which one fits

Vapi may suit you if this describes you: developers and technical teams who want fine-grained control over every component of the voice pipeline and are comfortable assembling and costing the providers themselves.

Calldesk may suit you if your calls match one of its plans. Lite is for straightforward calls such as confirmations and quick questions, where cost matters most. Standard is for most businesses: reception, booking, intake and after-hours coverage. Pro is for complex or high-stakes calls where reasoning and tone matter most. Current prices are on the pricing page at /pricing.

What we could not confirm about Vapi

  • The $0.05 per minute hosting fee is stated on the pricing page; the documentation pages we read describe the hosting fee without repeating the amount.
  • Whether a Vapi-provided free phone number can be ported out to another carrier was not found in the pages read.
  • The vendor's security portal (security.vapi.ai) was not opened, so certification reports were not independently seen.
  • Exact JSON shape of an assistant export and whether knowledge-base files are downloadable (not just listable) was not verified.
